What’s the difference between partial and full highlights?
The primary difference between partial and full highlights lies in the extent and placement of the coloring technique:
Partial Highlights:
- Focus on specific sections of the hair, typically around the face or the top layer, leaving some natural color underneath.
- Offer a brightening or framing effect, often using foils and color of your choice.
- Examples include: adding highlights only at the mohawk section, top half of the hair, and top half with the front sides of the hair.
- Ideal for a subtle, natural-looking color enhancement.
Full Highlights:
- Color the entire head, from the front, sides, and back, often including the nape of the neck.
- Achieve more saturated and consistent color throughout the hair, perfect for those who prefer a consistent look.
- Require more foils and a complete head of highlighting to gradually change the overall color or create a lighter base without bleaching all the hair.
Both partial and full highlights can work for many hair colors and can be combined with techniques like balayage for various effects. Partial highlights are generally less expensive, easier to maintain, and less likely to cause hair damage, making them a popular option for those seeking a less intensive coloring experience.
