How to measure hair length?

To measure hair length accurately, use a flexible measuring tape and follow these steps:

  1. Lay the measuring tape at the center of your hairline, ensuring the tip sits against your hairline.
  2. Slowly guide the tape along the top of your head like a center parting, down your back, and to the ends of your hair.
  3. Alternatively, pin or clip the measuring tape at the topmost center of your head for convenience, then measure from the head to the tip of your longest hair strand.

Although this method measures the length of a "mass" of hair, it's still a widely used and practical option for tracking hair growth. Other methods include using body parts as a reference (e.g., shoulder-length, bra strap-length) or taking pictures over time to compare hair growth. Remember to always measure consistently (wet or dry) to ensure comparable results.

For more detailed measurements, you can also measure at different points on your head such as the front, middle front, mid-back, back, and sides, combing the hair down to achieve a consistent length. Choose the longest measurement as your overall length.

Regardless of the method, always ensure you have someone to help hold the tape reasonably still if your hair is very long, as this can be challenging to do alone.
