Do essential oils for hair growth really work?
Peppermint oil, specifically, has shown promising effects on hair growth. A study found that 3% peppermint oil (PEO) significantly increased hair growth by promoting hair follicle number, follicle depth, and dermal thickness at week 2, compared to other treatments including minoxidil (MXD) in a controlled experiment on C57BL/6 mice. Menthol, a major constituent of peppermint oil, is recognized for its penetration-enhancing properties and for increasing sensitivity of cutaneous cold receptors. The study indicates that PEO has potential for use as a practical agent for hair growth without toxic side effects.
Additionally, other essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, rosemary, and thyme have been highlighted for contributing to hair growth, increasing cell turnover, and stimulating scalp health. Carrier oils like almond and jojoba oils are also noted for moisturizing and soothing the scalp. While these oils may be beneficial for hair health, the efficacy of essential oils for hair growth in humans has not been extensively studied in the general population as the key study was conducted on mice. It's essential to note individual variations and potential allergic reactions when using essential oils on human hair.
To use essential oils safely, it is recommended to dilute them with carrier oils like jojoba oil or use already formulated products containing essential oils. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin on your scalp prior to full application, as some people may experience irritation or allergic reactions to essential oils.
